In it for the long stretch

It took breaking an arm in a surfing mishap 10 years ago for Charlotte Dodson to realise the power of yoga. Dodson, now a yoga instructor, was working in advertising, when the accident, which required a plate and pins to be inserted in her arm, changed her outlook in life.

“It was a blessing in disguise”, Dodson says. “I realised yoga was so much more than just stretching; it affects all areas of your life”.

Dodson used yoga as part of her recovery and over time it became the main focus in her life. After gradually stepping down from her advertising career, Dodson now teaches yoga to groups and individuals and just spent the past three months in New York working with fledgling Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr.

“My business is growing more on the private side, one-on-one and small groups, so I can tailor it more. Yoga is very individual so you have to connect with the person”, she says.

Dodson studied yoga at the Nature Cure College and has since undertaken training in India, London and New York.

“I travel with my clients and can teach it to anyone anywhere in the world”, she says.

As well as teaching people how to become yoga instrucors, the course also pairs students up with a suitable mentor.

“I meet with my teacher three times a week. It is important to practise as well as teach,” she says.

She teaches 15 classes a week which range from an hour to 90 minutes and vary in intensity.

“Helping people relax after a stressful day is extremely satisfying”, Dodson says.

YOGA TO THE STARS
CHARLOTTE DODSON: bending over backwards, to meet the needs of her celebrity clientele.
Micro hemlines are back in fashion and women are reaching for their yoga timetables faster than you can say pins. The new spring summer fashion dubbed ‘body con’ by Australian magazine editors, will be foremost in the minds of women this month as they aspire to a yoga-toned body.
Certified yoga instructor Charlotte Dodson is someone who already knows the secret to great body image. As private teacher to Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr – the blue eyed brunette who was special guest at this year’s 2007 Rosemount Australian Fashion Week – Dodson is happy to help students of all ages and levels perfect their figure before summer hits.
Dodson’s residency at the boutique Balance Moves yoga studio in Bondi Beach may be just 19-weeks old, but the dynamic teacher has already received celebrity endorsement. “I have taught Miranda in New York and I also teach her when she is here shooting her Portmans
campaign every six weeks. But ‘body -con’ and fashion trends come and go, what I teach Miranda and all my clients is how to be themselves at their best.” “I do home visits, I travel abroad with my clients. I offer home consultations for high profile people
who need a lot of privacy. I guess you could say I’m flexible!” Dodson says with a smile.

Specialising in a rare blend of dynamic hatha and kundalini yoga, Charlotte Dodson is gaining a reputation  as a creative teacher with a flair for one-on-one consultation. “I love teaching in Sydney – it’s a stressful city and yet every day I am helping people achieve a lifestyle that is more balanced and stress-free like mine!”

Charlotte will be available for interviews during the last two weeks of June. Please find
attached an excerpt of Miranda Kerr article from OK magazine May 21st 2007.

Charlotte Dodson – the preferred yoga teacher to Australia’s top models.
Australian born Miranda Kerr may have adopted New York as her home, but the svelte Victoria’s
Secret still chooses to practice yoga with Australian-based yoga teacher Charlotte Dodson.
Why you ask? Because Charlotte Dodson customizes yoga routines to suit the model’s
busy lifestyle and often hectic international schedule.
As a dynamic hatha and kundalini specialist, Charlotte Dodson says eight years of training have
shown her the many benefits of private one-on-one consultation.
With a background in yoga teaching and study from India and London to Sydney and New York,
Dodson’s qualifications and experience have helped her attract a high –profile clientele.
“Rather than students sitting in a pose on automatic pilot, I like to progress people,
I always like to keep my classes creative and challenge my students to be present and mindful at
all times,” says Dodson.
This approach has hit a chord with top supermodel Miranda Kerr, who cited Charlotte Dodson as
her favourite teacher when she was in Sydney to shoot a Portman’s campaign in early August.
“With yoga I believe it’s really important who you have as a teacher, to me Charlotte
is the best - her energy is really grounding and nurturing, it has become a part of my
life,” says Miranda Kerr.
Dodson says her business based in Sydney is booming, while her private lessons have taken off
with professionals from the fashion, film and media industry. Thrilled to have a continuing
association with Miranda Kerr, Charlotte emphasizes her holistic approach to the yogic systems
she teaches.
“Once I have established a relationship with any client, I am always keen to keep working with
them.”
“With Miranda I have followed her progression both professionally and in yoga practice. I have
taught her in New York and now I teach her every six weeks when she returns home to shoot
campaigns.”
“But with all my private clients I offer home consultations, I travel abroad with my clients, I
prescribe what they need. I guess you could say I’m flexible!” Dodson says with a smile.
